Considerable importance shall be attached to the wishes of the patient and his/her next-of-kin regarding whether the patient shall be at home or in an institution during the last stages of life. If the sick person is at home, both the patient and relatives shall receive sufficient instruction in use of medicines, pain relief equipment and other aids. The patient has the right to receive information about persons in the health service who may be contacted as and when necessary.
Care and respect for the individual is particularly important when encountering dying persons and people with incurable illnesses. The patient must receive assistance so that his/her final days are felt to be meaningful. The patient shall live such as he/she wishes to the greatest possible degree.
