Following a written application from the parents, the pupil may be exempted from participating in classes regarded as being contrary to his own religious or ethical beliefs, or which they experience as disagreeable or insulting. The school shall arrange so that an alternative education is provided within the educational programme. This means that the pupil will receive the same knowledge as other pupils, but using a different approach. Pupils who have reached the age of 15 shall make their own application. Exemption applies to all school subjects. each year, the school shall inform pupils and parents of the rules for exemption and of the content of education.
Religion, life philosophy and ethics is a normal school subject which normally applies to all pupils. Education in this subject shall not be instructive. The school shall show respect for the pupils’ and the parents’ religious and ethical convictions and ensure the right to equality of education. Nevertheless, situations may arise which individual parents or pupils consider to be problematic.
